How to Make DIY dal mix

Preparation time:

10 to 30 mins

Serves:

Serves 2 as a main, or 4 as a starter

Ingredients

  • 180g/6oz red lentils
  • 1 vegetable stock
  • 1 dried bay leaf
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp garam masala or curry powder
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp garlic
  • pinch dried chilli

Method

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in the 350g/12oz jam jar and seal with a lid. It will keep until you’re ready to use in a hurry!

  2. When ready to use, tip the contents of the jar into a saucepan and add 2 jars of water (approximately 600ml/1 pint). Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer, cover and cook for 10-15 minutes until the lentils are soft.

  3. Remove from the heat and leave to stand for 5 minutes before serving.
